3. The Church Exiled – God’s people living outside of the kingdom
a. Text: 2 Chronicles 36:17-21/ 1 Peter 2:9-10 – The introduction to the people living in exile.
b. This message will highlight a covenant people who are living in a place that is anathema to the principles on which they have based their community. This message will show what it means to live as a believer in a non-believing community.
c. Worship as these people knew it underwent a radical shift. They no longer were able to keep the central tenets of their worship because they could not go to the temple, which was not only far away but had been leveled. The rise of synagogue worship took place and the people began to wrap their understanding of God up in the idea of maintaining separateness with the society they now lived in.
